Lara - Senior Software Engineer

With a background in Electrical Engineering and a passion for software, Lara feels right at home at Royal Houdijk. Whether testing and preparing in Vlaardingen or commissioning machines at customer sites worldwide, she and her team always strive for the same goal – the most efficient machine and a satisfied customer.

After initially starting my studies in Civil Engineering, I later decided to look for a more technical field. That led me to Electrical Engineering, where I truly felt at home. During my studies, I focused primarily on the software side of Electrical Engineering, which aligns very well with my role here at Royal Houdijk. Another similarity between my studies and my current role is the predominance of men. When I visit a customer, I’m sometimes met with surprised looks, as many expect a software engineer to be male. I always find that amusing, I’m perfectly comfortable in the male-dominated world of machine building. Fortunately, outside of work, I have plenty of girlfriends to keep things balanced.

I spend a large part of my time abroad, visiting customers where I commission machines using the software I have engineered. At customer sites, we work long days and put in a lot of effort, which I actually enjoy. Together with the Royal Houdijk team, we all share one goal: to ensure the machine is as efficient as possible and the customer is satisfied. Of course, we also have evenings and Sundays to explore the country and its culture.

Although I spend a lot of time abroad, I spend the majority of my time in Vlaardingen. There, I am either preparing software in my department or testing it in the factory. Often, an advanced part of the machine is assembled so that we can test both mechanically and functionally in advance. This ensures that we are well-prepared when it comes time for commissioning.
